Hi, I'm Kelly Goyette.
In more than 20 years of working with even the most prolific, seasoned writers, I can testify that knowing a lot about your subject doesn’t automatically mean writing about it comes easy. For most people, the more you know (and the more you care), the more painful the writing process tends to be.
That’s where I come in. You’re the expert on your subject. My expertise is knowing how to balance curiosity with distance: getting deep into your ideas while providing an outside perspective.
My background includes teaching writing, training and supervising writing consultants, and thousands of hours working one-on-one with writers across disciplines. Much of my work now involves helping researchers, scientists, medical professionals, and other experts bring complex projects together: the planning, the thinking, the writing, and all the decisions in between.

What It’s Like to Work With Me
You’re smart, capable, and completely overwhelmed. Maybe you can’t get started. Maybe you have a head full of ideas or data but can’t figure out what shape they should take. Maybe you’re already knee-deep in a sprawling draft.
My point is, you don’t have to know exactly what kind of help you need before we start. In fact, you don’t even need to have a draft. When you’ve been carrying it all around for long enough, holding the whole thing in your head and thinking about it at the same time gets difficult. We start with whatever you’ve got, pull the complexity into the open, and sort through it together. I listen closely, ask questions, and notice things out loud that can be hard to see from up close.
You’re the authority on your ideas, and that's our anchor. Your writing stays yours, and your decisions about it belong to you. In our sessions together, we apply different strategies and figure out what works for you. So the next time you get stuck, you’ll have a better sense of what to do next.

What Clients Say
Writers come to this work with different goals, challenges, and definitions of progress. Here’s what clients have shared about the experience of working together.
I initially connected with Kelly when she taught at the Thompson Writing Program at Duke as a supervisor in the Writing Center. I found her feedback so valuable that I reached out to her for additional assistance for both my medical school and residency application personal statements several years later. I was looking for more specific/personalized guidance and feedback than what I had received from my pre-med advisors. Through several sessions, Kelly took the time to help me determine the values which I most identified with and the personal experiences which reflected those and would best represent my candidacy for medical school and residency. She was patient, non-judgmental, compassionate, detail-oriented, and reliable. I was really satisfied with the final versions of my personal statements and felt that she helped me express myself to admissions committees in a way I wouldn’t have been able to do as well on my own. As a result of working with Kelly, I am much more mindful of my writing as a whole, including incorporating some general ideas such as selecting a theme, emphasizing paragraph transitions for overall flow.

Rates & Sessions
Every writer needs a different kind of support. We’ll use your free consultation to talk through your goals, your process, and what would be most useful right now. From there, we’ll find a structure and rate that feels like the right fit.
Free Consultation
Our first conversation is a chance to get to know each other and see whether we’re a good fit. You can tell me about your project and ask questions, and I’ll have questions for you, too. Together, we’ll get a better sense of the scope and talk through how we might approach it: how sessions are structured, what happens between them, and what you can expect from me. We won’t dig into the writing itself yet. The goal is to set the stage and make sure we both know what we’re signing up for.
Sessions
Most clients work with me in packages of 10 sessions, which gives us time to dig into the writing and adjust as the project develops. Single sessions are also available when you have a specific problem you want to work through.
Rates
My standard rate is $150–$225 per hour, depending on the nature of the work. Packages of 10 sessions receive a 10% discount. If cost is a barrier, please ask me about sliding-scale availability.
Institutional Funding
If your university, employer, research center, or another organization can fund our work, I’m happy to contract with them directly. If you need to request funding first, I can also help you put together a short proposal.
